For years, I’ve written about how sugar impacts weight loss because it is more problematic than eating too much fat or not exercising.
Of all the requests I get in coaching, sugar addiction is one of the most common challenges women face.
The truth is sugar isn’t just a craving; it’s an addiction that wreaks havoc on your body, mind, and emotions. It’s linked to weight gain, heart disease, inflammation, and even autoimmune disorders.
But even more subtly, sugar is the culprit behind the shame and frustration many women feel when they can’t control their eating habits. The cycle of binging and guilt can be tough to break, and often, it feels like it’s all your fault.
Sugar cravings are no joke!

Overview of Sugar Problems
Eating too much sugar can cause health problems, such as obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. The sugars in foods like sodas and processed snacks can also contribute to inflammation, which affects many parts of the body.
Recent research has found that sugar can play a role in diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and psoriasis by making inflammation worse.
It’s so important for you to understand how eating too much sugar affects the immune system and how it can cause inflammation, which is linked to these diseases.
Most women reading my posts are concerned about weight gain or are trying to lose weight. Over consumption of sugar is definitely a factor for that. But it’s absolutely a part of greater health problems in general.
We can look around and see that obesity, heart disease, and diabetes are problems for many women. We also know many women have thyroid and autoimmune diseases.
Another thing not talked about enough is the shame and embarressment women feel about their eating habits. When sugar addiction leads to gorging or binging, this creates a cycle of shame.
This shame keeps women from getting help because we’ve been told that we should be able to control ourselves.
But because of the highly addictive nature of sugar, this is much harder than it seems like it should be.
Is sugar to blame for all of that?
Well, it is a pretty big part of it. For this post, I’m concentrating on actual sugar. However, there are many foods that act like sugar in the body such as breads, pastas, crackers, and foods based on processed grains.
When you are eliminating sugar from your diet; eventually you’ll want to decrease processed foods that also elevate your blood sugar levels.
You’ll probably pick up as you read that I think of sugar and foods that act like sugar in the body are highly addictive. That’s because they are.
I’ve seen the suffering women go through when they can’t quit overeating, gorging, or binging on sugary foods.
Some women go for straight sugary foods. Others prefer a savory version found in breads, pasta, pizza, or chips.
What is Sugar?
Sugar comes in many forms. For the purpose of this post, I am concentrating on sugar forms that are easily obtained and eaten, are processed, raise your blood sugar quickly, and are addictive.
That would be a huge list! So I’m going to share the most common kinds.
The one that gets us in the most trouble is white sugar because added sugars are the basis for so many sweet foods we eat: cakes, candy, pies, cookies, baked goods, sodas, sweet tea, syrups, and ice cream.
Perhaps we should give chocolate it’s own category! Chocolate itself isn’t sweet. It requires a lot of sugar and fat to make it the delicious and addictive treat we know and love.
Sometimes you will see sugar on the label or you might see high fructose corn syrup. But can cause excess sugar consumption.
Also sugar-sweetened beverages are a huge problem for many people. Whether it is soda, juices, commercial smoothies, sweet coffee drinks, or sweet tea; many people consume much of their sugar in a quickly absorbed drink.
Other sugars are honey, coconut sugar, molasses, agave, maple syrup. These are sometimes used in place of white sugar and provide flavor in addition to the sweet taste. When you are breaking up with sugar, it’s best to avoid this as well.
Sugar also is a natural part of fruits. However, if you eat the whole fruit, you get nutritional benefits and fiber so you can enjoy fruit in moderation.
Why Is Sugar a Problem?
There isn’t just one problem with sugar. There are countless problems with sugar. As a life coach who works with women, I can say that sugar is highly addictive and problematic for a lot of women.

7 Reasons to Give Up Sugar
Sugar messes with your brain
Sugar is an interesting substance. It not only affects your body; it also affects your brain.
If you have a special kind of sweet treat you turn to often, take a few seconds and think about it. What is happening in your brain? Did you feel a little excitement thinking about it?
Emotionally, humans are wired to seek pleasure and avoid pain. In addition, we are also wired to get energy as easily as possible. Sugar provides a primitive solution to both of these needs.
Brain-wise, every time you use sugar to feel better, meaning you eat sugar, not for hunger, but to feel better in some other way, you deepen the dependency.
Sugar is addictive
Yes, sugar is addictive. In my practice, it’s the number one issue women are dealing with. At first anyway. Once we clear up the dependency, it becomes apparent that there are other issues. So the good news is that you can break free from sugar.
However, it takes a few weeks to retrain your brain and free yourself from the dependency. I know that may seem impossible right now, but that is just the dependency speaking. It’s not true.
This doesn’t mean you will never have sugar treats again. You will probably be able to enjoy an occasionally treat at times, but you will not be craving it in the same way and you’ll be able to stop when you are full or satisfied.
Sugar is bad for your skin
I believe that too much sugar causes premature aging and that when you quit eating sugar your skin will look better.
Sugar can also cause you to have more wrinkles because of inflammation.
Sugar has no nutritional value on its own
As delicious as sugar makes foods, it really is empty calories. But it’s not the calories themselves that are the problem. Sugar acts differently in your body than calories from fat.
It might surprise you to learn that fat and oils themselves will not cause you to gain weight. However, sugar can pack on the pounds and do that quickly.
This is because when you eat or drink a sugary item, it starts creating problems immediately.
Human survival depended on getting enough food. At one time finding honey or fruits were helpful to humans. But at this point in time, we are overwhelmed by all the fast-energy foods around us.
But our brains still love that quick energy boost. The problem is that when you eat too much of that, which is a natural tendency, it can take the place of more nutritional choices.
Over consumption of sugar can lead to metabolic problems
The easiest way I can explain having a metabolic problem is that it’s almost impossible for you to lose weight, even if you aren’t overeating. You might also have a big tummy that just won’t go away. Other symptoms are high blood pressure and high blood sugar.
Sugar is the leading cause of weight gain
I was a young adult in the 80’s and low fat became the main premise of weight loss. People went crazy for low fat foods. Any of you remember those little chocolate sugar bomb cookies that were fat free?
But despite everyone’s best efforts, people kept gaining weight and obesity rates really shot up.
Excess sugar (and foods that act like sugar in your body) are the real cause of weight gain. That’s why diets such as keto or low carb can be effective.
Excess sugar can lead to insulin resistance
After years of overeating sugary foods you can develop insulin resistance and this causes the fat to really increase. When your body can’t effectively use sugar, it begins to push the excess into your fat cells.
Once you are at this point, it can be really frustrating because your body can’t effectively access your own body’s fat to use for energy.
Benefits of Reducing Sugar Consumption
You will look and feel better when you reduce your sugar intake.
Reducing sugar’s adverse effects to your body starts with identifying how and when sugar is a problem for you.
How is Sugar a Problem for You?
For some of you, you may be nibbling or eating things throughout the day. May at specific times such as throughout the workday or maybe grazing the evening away as you watch TV or scroll.
Some of you may have very specific ways in which you consume sugar in excess. I talk to many women who will binge or overeat on sugary foods in very large quantities and often in secret.
While you may think your sugar consumption is a result of lack of willpower, that isn’t the reason at all. I consider sugar a highly addictive substance and at some point it can feel like it is running your life.
What both of these types of sugar addictions have in common is that sugary foods are used to cope with your life.
When you realize that the disgust you feel after a huge sugar binge or after eating candy all day, is in its own way, a way of numbing out about things, you will begin to see it differently.

What Can I Do About My Sugar Addiction?
Awareness is the first step. Just knowing that you are up against more than just weak willpower or some personal failing will help a lot.
One thing I do want you to know is that even if you have been overeating sugar for years, the process is relatively painless and you can complete it in four to six weeks.
All of my clients are amazed when they realize one day that sugar is no longer a problem in their lives.
I remember once I had a client that felt so strong after she finally ditched her sugar overeating. She told me that she finally felt strong enough to tackle a tough relationship because of the power she had gained by overcoming her dependency on her favorite sugary treat.
To get started, you can read some more posts here to help build a foundation. I have several long-time readers who have used my blog and emails to change their lives.
You can also work with me one-on-one. I can guarantee that you can kick a sugar habit within the 16-week coaching package. The bonus to working with me is that you can concurrently clean up relationships, your own self-confidence, and overworking and work issues.
Finally, I am offering a 6-week group coaching program that will focus only on breaking sugar overeating. You can find more information here.
What I want you to take away from this post is that no matter how long you have had a problem with sugar in your life, you can change that. Not only can you change it but it will make your life better in all the ways.
Now, my caveat there is that without sugar, you will actually be feeling your life and that may be uncomfortable at first.
That’s why I devote several weeks to the process, if you cut out sugar without addressing your overall life, you are just adding stress to your life and not getting all the benefits.
This might be the most powerful and amazing thing you do. Not just getting unplugged from sugar dependency but stepping into your very own life in a powerful way.
Sugar itself is not good for you but worse is the anxiety and mood swings that come with overconsuming sugar. There is a lot of shame and hiding involved with sugar addictions and just imagine what it would be like to live without the shame and hiding.
It’s amazing that’s what it is like.
