Getting older doesn’t mean you can’t have beautiful skin. I’ll show you how to have great skin at any age!

Updated: 2-7-2021

I can honestly say that my skin looks better now than it ever has in my life. Sometimes I feel like I’m reverse aging! At 58, I’m really happy with the way my face looks.

I have a similar post I wrote called How to Look Younger Naturally where I go into more detail than I did in this post.

How to Have Great Skin at Any Age

When I was growing up, I was taught to never ask a grown woman her age. Ever.

However, I get asked my age on a regular basis, at least once a week.

Because I have grown children, grand-children, I get that there is a disconnect between my unwrinkled skin and the obvious clues that I am no 40-year old.

I think a big reason that I don’t look my age is my skin. I won’t pretend that I have the skin of a 20 or even 30-year-old. I don’t.

I spent way too many years abusing it in the sun. Still, I don’t have wrinkles and it’s holding up pretty darn well. As a result, I’ll get asked what I do to keep my skin looking good. I am always willing to share what has worked.

The truth is, I’ve spent my adult life doing things to keep my skin in good shape.

It’s harder to fix damaged skin than it is to not damage it in the first place. Really, the earlier you begin, the better off you’ll be. Trust me on this one.

Your Skin as You Get Older

Getting older is wonderful in some ways but it’s humbling in others. Looking and feeling your best makes it somewhat easier.

I know people say that looks aren’t everything and every day I see women who have given up in that respect. It’s a personal decision.

I have no intention of ever giving up. I want to look and feel my best at any age and having good skin is definitely a part of that.

Fair warning—keeping your skin looking youthful is more of a lifestyle than a quick fix. It requires a commitment to eating right, exercising, avoiding excessive sun, and using decent products.

Finally, here is my list of EVERYTHING I do to keep my skin in good shape. No invasive procedures required!

Avoid Sugar and Foods That Act Like Sugar

I call this my #1 Skin care secret. Sugar and foods like sugar cause inflammation and inflammation damages your skin.

When I’ve had a few days of indulging in these kinds of foods, I can see it immediately in my skin. My color and texture don’t look so good.

Avoiding sugar and foods that act like sugar in your body gives you two-fold benefits. Not only does your skin look better but it’s good for your body as well!

Many foods such as bread, pasta, chips, and many other foods are just as damaging as cookies and sweets. They act like sugar in the body. The less you eat of these, the better for your skin!

It might seem like this is impossible to do and maybe it’s not the easiest thing in the beginning.

But once you eliminate these kinds of foods, you find so much variety in the rest of the food world. And as I’ll talk about next, that variety is exactly the kinds of food your skin loves.

The problem with these foods are not the calories. It’s that the sugar in them, ends up creating inflammation in your body. In addition, they create problems with your insulin and that does cause weight gain.

Eat Real Food

My idea of real food is meats, eggs, vegetables, fruits, and healthy fats. I eat these things 90% of the time. Some people are able to tolerate some whole grains and/or dairy.

When you remove filler foods like pasta and rice (which can cause inflammation) from your daily meals, you start to appreciate how good real food tastes. Real food also tastes great because you eat it with healthy fats and oils.

One of the problems people have with eating meats and vegetables is that we’ve been convinced that we need to eat the leanest meats and that our vegetables can only be steamed to be healthy.

Neither of these things are bad by themselves but when it’s the only way you eat your meat and vegetables, it can be a dreary prospect.

Eat real food cooked, prepared, and served in a variety of ways with generous amounts of healthy fats.

Try to get as much variety as possible. You don’t need complicated recipes to have delicious meals.

Bonus: How to enjoy real foods

If you eat meat, eat a variety of different meats including the fatty ones.

In addition, use liberal quantities of olive oil, coconut oil, and butter in the cooking and dressing of foods.

Food tastes great and I never ever feel deprived because I don’t eat sugar and filler foods such as pasta or bread.. Real food that is cooked and served with plenty of fat tastes amazing!

Variety is key. Eat as many colors of the rainbow as you can. I eat raw vegetables and fruits and I liked cooked ones. I like them roasted, sautéed, and steamed. It’s all good in the vegetable world. The more the merrier.

Most mornings I also have a cup of bone broth and most afternoons I have a green smoothie.

Before I was eating real food, I was lucky if I managed to eat a couple of vegetables a day. And I didn’t have much variety. Now I eat vegetables with every meal and I enjoy lots of variety.

Your taste buds and your brain will adjust!

I didn’t invent this stuff. I did my first Whole 30 a few years ago and I’ve never gone back to eating the Standard American Diet. And I don’t miss it!

Exercise

Moving your body is good for your skin. Humans are meant to be in motion. However, the way most of us work, we do not get in as much movement as is optimum. So, you have to work at it.

I like exercise that gets my heart rate up, my breathing deeper, but that also promotes relaxation. I don’t believe exercise should be punishment—I believe it should be nourishing.

Exercise is good for you skin because it promotes circulation that allows nutrients and oxygen to be carried to your skin cells and waste products to be removed.

There is also some research that indicates that reducing stress also helps the skin.

But there does seem to be strong indications that exercise improves skin at a cellular level. Studies show the skin of an exerciser can look younger at a cellular level.

Use Quality Products

I have only used one source of products for 15 years. To say I’m a dedicated user would be an understatement.

I started using Suzanne Somers products back in my early forties and I still love them to this day. I’ve included additional information at bottom of post if you’re interested in hearing more.

I use her cleansers, toner, moisturizers, serums, eye cream, some makeup, and the best lip balm out there.

They smell divine. They are organic. Best of all, they work great.

All that being said, you have to find products that you like and believe in. And use them! Keep your skin clean, moisturized, and nourished.

Bone Broth

I added bone broth to my daily diet about six years ago. Here’s the post where I write about it,  Is Bone Broth Better Than Botox?

2021 Update: I now make Bone Broth in my Instant Pot. Much easier and faster!

But I’ve seen the value to having this in my diet. My nails are strong. My skin stays soft. My skin looks (to me) plumper. As in my cheek area looks nice and filled in.

I’m obviously sold on this since I make it every week and I’ve found a place to get good quality bones for a good price.

My skin seems to agree that it’s good stuff.

How to Have Great Skin at Any Age

To have great skin at any age, you have to take care of it by limiting inflammatory foods, eating real food, exercising, and using good products.

It’s a good feeling to be older and looking my best. After three years of eating a real food diet my skin looks better now that it ever has in my life.

No kidding. As in I think it looks better now than it did in my teens, 20’s, 30’s, or 40’s. It didn’t happen overnight, but it did happen and I couldn’t be happier with the results.

It’s an amazing feeling to feel like I have some control over how aging is affecting my skin.

Now don’t get me wrong, I have daughters that are in their 20’s and 30’s. I don’t have their skin! But I am not complaining. I feel like I am doing the best I can and it shows.

Sprouts is THE best! Thanks for the comment Marie–it’s great to hear about other people’s experience too. Sometimes I wonder if I’m the only person making this stuff.

Thanks for the feedback Yuliya! Choosing the food we eat is, in my opinion, the most important thing we need to do for health and our looks. And the younger you start–the better.

Great post! It’s never too soon to start the anti-aging process, as we will never be a day younger than we were the day before! Even when I was eighteen, I was still using anti-aging moisturizer and making sure to take gentle care of the area around my eyes to prevent premature crow’s feet.

I love that Heather! Me too on the tap tap around the eyes. Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

Great tips! I’m really going to try to cut my sweets though. I’m so into desserts. Thanks for the share. xx
