How I Find Time to Work Out Daily

With juggling work, family, friends, church, and other activities, it can seem almost impossible to find the time to fit exercise into an already busy life. Yet we all know how important it is to our health and our mental well being.

Here’s how I always find time to work out.

Our bodies need to move and our busy modern life, paradoxically, doesn’t provide the kind of movement we need to stay healthy. People tend to lump exercise into the “optional” category of activity or even worse, something to dread and avoid.

Yet, we intrinsically know that exercise is important. So even though we may skip it during the day, we often go to bed feeling guilty about it. Then we wake up with good intentions about doing better.

But day after day, we don’t seem to be able to get into the groove of regular exercise. I believe that regular exercise is not just essential to our aesthetic ideals, it’s vital to our overall health, beauty, and emotional well-being. It’s not really optional.

How to Find Time to Work Out

Throughout my adult life, I have always enjoyed exercising and found time for it no matter what was going on in my life: three kids, graduate school, work, volunteering, church activities. It really doesn’t seem to matter how much or how little I have going on—exercise gets done.

So, I’ve been thinking about why that has been relatively easy for me. I’m not saying exercising is always easy, but it’s relatively easy for me to make it a priority in my life.

It’s more than knowing how beneficial it is. We all believe that, to some extent.

I think, it’s believing that it is as fundamental, as eating, or brushing your teeth, or anything really. I don’t believe exercise is optional. It’s always a priority.

That being said, fitting exercise into a busy life can definitely be challenging. Over the years, I’ve found things that work for me that help me find time to work out and can help you too.

Exercise has to be a priority.

This tops my list because I believe that you have to have . I don’t question its importance and I am totally willing to give up other things to make it happen.

Exercise needs to be important to you because  it’s really important for the normal functioning of your body throughout your life.

For me, being active, vigorous, and able to participate in almost anything is essential for me. I’m not in a competition with anyone else about how I look. However, I do want to be able to do anything I want physically.

I know that I want to be able to walk anywhere I want for long distances. I want to be able to play with my granddaughters. I want to fully experience the world and a healthy body allows me to do that.

And so I exercise. I always find time to work out. I’ve been able to do this because I have a few ideas about fitting exercise into my daily life.

Keep your feet happy too!

I also love that all her workouts are barefoot and I can do them right in my living room. They don’t take up much space and I can do one easily whenever I need to relieve some tension. They are cardio, strength, and stretch all in one. They are my FAVORITE workouts of all time. They are all either 30 or 45 minutes long.

If you have a desk job, I HIGHLY recommend her workouts for getting the kinks out at the end of the day. I literally crave these workouts.

Find exercise that you actually like most of the time.

One of the big keys to sticking with exercise is finding ones that you like. Even a big exercise fan like me, can at times not look forward to working out. But since I’ve chosen workouts that I enjoy for the most part, it is easier to stick with them on a consistent basis.

I love walking and enjoy that almost every day. I enjoy higher intensity workouts about three times a week. And finally I do the Ellen Barrett workouts 2–3 times a week. I get a lot of variety because I have 12 HIIT workouts to choose from and about 8 EB workouts on hand. So, I can usually find something that fits my mood on any day.

Keep track of your workouts.

I like to keep track of my workouts. For the past couple of years, I have used a plain old 8 X 11 calendar that I write on each day, in red, what workout or workouts I did that day. That way I can easily see what I need to do on any particular day.

I try to get all the body parts worked every week as well as several good walks. When I see that most days have something in red in the squares, then I know I’m getting my exercise in. When I see a few blank squares, I know I need to get back on track.

I love the Blue Sky calendar from Amazon in the 8 X 11 size. I use it EVERY day. It lays flat on my kitchen counter and I easily keep track of my work outs. I just couldn't find what I wanted in stores. And it's under $7. Perfect!

I don’t own a personal tracker, but I know some people swear by them. I trust my body to tell me what I need as well as a long-term experience of what works best for me. However, I’ve heard good things about this one from my daughter. It has so motivated her to get her 10,000 steps in each day! Maybe she'll get me one for Christmas?

Make your workout convenient.

Exercise does not have to take place at the gym or anywhere special. Gyms just have never worked for me as a way of getting or staying in shape. I’ve combined working out at home with walking for over 20 years and I’m in the best shape of my life. (I recently tried on and fitted easily into my high school prom dress!)

Combined with clean eating, it’s a combination that works really well for me. Some people have more room for special equipment and that’s cool too. I don’t. I keep some light hand weights. Otherwise, I’m just using my body weight for strength training and the walking trail for cardio.

For me, being able to work out when I want to, really helps me. If I have to get in a car and travel, it’s more difficult for me to make that happen. And I just don’t enjoy workout in gyms. Occasionally, I’ll use the treadmill or elliptical in the fitness room but otherwise, I just do my own thing.

I’ve always been a big fan of workout videos. These days, there are so many online options that are affordable.

Get the family involved.

Walking can be a family activity or children can play nearby while you do an exercise video. I don’t mind pushing my younger granddaughter in a stroller or taking my older granddaughter out for a walk. I always involved my own kids this way and they grown up to have healthy bodies and ideas about exercise.

When you go to the playground make sure to get some activity yourself. I love these ideas from The Soccer Mom Blog.

Enjoy ALL the benefits of exercise.

When we think about exercise or working out, we often think about this in relation to getting in shape or losing weight. Exercise is SO much more than that! Sometimes because of other factors such as stress, illness, diet, or even sleep, we may not see the immediate physical effects of exercise.

It is vital to appreciate ALL the things that exercise can do for you. If you only look at the visible physical changes you may get discouraged before these manifest themselves.

Working out and exercising bring so much more to your life than just some outward changes.

Exercise can have positive internal effects.

Exercise can have positive mental effects.

Exercise can have positive emotional or spiritual effects.

Exercise can make you feel stronger, more in control, and more beautiful. When you find time to exercise you improve almost every other area of your life and health. It is incredible how it can benefit you. And the more types of exercise you do, the more benefits you get. Working out is one of the best natural remedies for many issues in your life.

You may or may not get thinner because you exercise, however, you will probably look better. Exercise does tone your muscles and it improves your skin. Your posture and vitality will improve and that will improve your appearance.

So, I encourage you to make the internal shift that exercise deserves a starring role in your life. When you make time to work out, you are doing one of the best things you possibly can, not just for yourself but for your family and everyone that loves you.

These are wonderful tips, because you point out how of it is really about creating a lifestyle to make it happen. I’ve been getting myself to be more consistent lately and it feels great. I’ve been focusing on making little habit changes, like setting a work alarm, so I can leave my desk in time to make it in time to the cardio kickboxing class I love. I’ve got that down, so I’ll add in something else next week.

Thank you so much for these tips. Motivation to workout is what holds me back. I know I need to, but some days I just don’t feel like it! I have to keep in mind the benefits that it reaps!

For me, the biggest motivation is that I feel better, both in body and mind. I really do choose exercise that I enjoy. That’s my biggest recommendation–just do what feels good!

I needed this as encouragement after the huge Thanksgiving dinner that I ate. The tip to track my workouts is one that I’m going to focus on right away. I’m a list person and tracking my goals and accomplishments always encourages me. Thanks for this post. It’s right on time!

I really like keeping track of what I’m doing. I want to re-emphasize that I am not hard-core about working out. I just like to make sure I get some kind of work out done each day. Thanks for the comment
